What Is a Tamper-Resistant Receptacle?

A tamper-resistant receptacle is an electrical outlet with internal shutters that block access to the energized contact openings. The shutters open when a plug applies pressure to both slots at once. This design helps prevent objects from entering one slot while preserving normal operation for compatible plugs and electrical devices.

Local relevance: Miami's humid, salt-influenced coastal air can affect outdoor and damp-location outlet choices, so tamper resistance alone does not address environmental exposure.

Key Takeaways About Tamper-resistant receptacle

  • Internal shutters cover the contact openings until a compatible plug engages them.
  • The receptacle supports ordinary plug use without a separate cover.
  • Tamper-resistant does not mean weatherproof or ground-fault protected.

How Tamper-resistant receptacle Works

A person holds a wall outlet and screwdriver beside a computer showing “Tamper-resistant receptacle”

A tamper-resistant receptacle places spring-loaded shutters behind the contact openings. The shutters stay closed when pressure reaches only one opening, such as when a small object enters it. A matching plug applies balanced pressure across the openings, which moves the shutters aside and allows the plug blades to reach the contacts.

Installation still requires correct wiring, grounding, box fit, and device orientation. The feature does not replace a GFCI receptacle, which responds to an electrical imbalance, or a weather-resistant receptacle, which is designed for damp or outdoor conditions. During an outlet installation, the receptacle type should match the room, wiring, and intended use.

From the Earth Electric team

When we install a tamper-resistant receptacle, we check the existing box, conductor connections, grounding path, and device fit. Our team also confirms that the receptacle type suits the location and works correctly with the plugs used there.

Tamper-resistant receptacle in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Miami homeowner replacing an older bedroom outlet may choose a tamper-resistant receptacle during electrical outlet installation. The new device keeps its internal shutters closed when an object presses against only one contact opening.
