What Is a Conduit?

A conduit is a protective raceway that encloses and routes electrical wires or cables. It may be made from metal or nonmetallic material and can run through walls, ceilings, floors, or exposed areas. Conduit helps protect wiring from physical damage, moisture, heat, and contact with surrounding building materials.

Local relevance: Miami's humid, salt-rich coastal air can accelerate corrosion on exposed metal conduit and its fittings, especially near outdoor wiring routes.

Key Takeaways About Conduit

  • Conduit is a raceway, not an electrical conductor.
  • The raceway protects wires along exposed or enclosed routes.
  • Conduit is often confused with the wires inside it.

How Conduit Works

Conduit creates a defined route for electrical conductors between electrical boxes, panels, devices, and other connection points. Installers select the raceway material and shape based on the wiring route and the conditions around it. Sections connect through fittings that keep the path continuous.

Wires pass through the finished raceway and remain accessible for inspection or future changes when the installation allows. A metal raceway can also provide a bonding path when installed correctly with approved fittings. Electrical boxes connect to conduit at switches, receptacles, and junction points. Flexible sections can help connect equipment that moves or vibrates, while rigid sections provide a stable route through a structure.

From the Earth Electric team

When we inspect conduit during Electrical Wiring Repair, we check its condition, fittings, route, and connection to electrical boxes. We also verify that the conductors inside are protected from abrasion, moisture, and crowded bends. Our team separates conduit problems from wire or connection problems before planning the repair.

Conduit in Practice: A Real-World Example

A damaged outdoor conduit can expose wiring near an exterior wall or equipment connection. An electrician may replace the affected raceway, secure the fittings, and inspect the wires for damage before restoring the circuit.
