What Is a Photocell?

Photocell is a light-sensing electrical control that turns outdoor lighting on when surrounding light becomes low and turns it off when daylight returns. The device supports automatic operation without a manual switch or scheduled timer. Photocells commonly control landscape, security, sign, and other exterior lights that need daily dusk-to-dawn operation.

Local relevance: Miami's humid coastal climate and salt-laden air can increase corrosion risk at exposed outdoor lighting connections, enclosures, and photocell components.

Key Takeaways About Photocell

  • Light level, not a clock, controls the switching action.
  • Placement affects when the fixture turns on and off.
  • A photocell is not the same as a motion sensor.

How Photocell Works

Photocell operation depends on a sensor that detects ambient light. As daylight fades, the sensor changes the electrical state of the control and allows the connected light to operate. As daylight returns, the control interrupts power to the lighting circuit. The switching point depends on the sensor design and the light reaching its sensing surface.

Outdoor lighting installers place the sensor where it can read general daylight without receiving direct light from the fixture it controls. A nearby wall, roof overhang, tree, or bright security light can affect that reading. A photocell may work with a timer or an LED driver when the lighting system requires separate control or power management.

From the Earth Electric team

When we install or troubleshoot a photocell, we check its orientation, wiring, enclosure, and exposure to surrounding light. We also test the connected outdoor fixture during changing light conditions. Our team looks for glare from the fixture itself, water intrusion, and loose connections that can cause unreliable switching.

Photocell in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner wants pathway and entry lights to operate from dusk until morning without remembering a switch. We install a photocell in a location with a clear view of daylight, then verify that the fixture responds correctly without direct glare from the light.
