What Is a Bonding Jumper?

Bonding jumper is a short conductor that connects metal parts of an electrical system so those parts remain at the same electrical potential. The connection may join a service enclosure, metal raceway, grounding electrode conductor, or other conductive component. This jumper supports a continuous path for fault current during panel work.

Local relevance: Miami's coastal humidity and salt air can accelerate corrosion on exposed electrical metalwork, so bonding connections may require close inspection during panel repair.

Key Takeaways About Bonding jumper

  • It connects conductive metal parts within an electrical system.
  • The connection supports continuity across removable or separate components.
  • It is not the same as a grounding electrode or ground rod.

How Bonding jumper Works

Bonding jumper works by creating a low-impedance connection between conductive parts that could otherwise become electrically separate. The conductor carries fault current across the connected parts and helps protective devices respond through the intended circuit path. Its placement depends on the equipment and the part being bonded.

Electricians inspect the jumper's terminations, conductor condition, and connection points during panel work. A loose connection, corrosion, or an unsuitable connection point can interrupt continuity. In a panel, the jumper may connect metal equipment to the bonding path. A grounding electrode conductor connects the electrical system to an electrode, while a bonding jumper connects conductive parts within that system.

From the Earth Electric team

When we work on an electrical panel, we inspect bonding jumpers for secure terminations, visible damage, and continuity through the connected metal parts. We also trace each connection to confirm that the jumper serves the intended equipment and does not confuse the neutral path with the equipment bonding path.

Bonding jumper in Practice: A Real-World Example

During an electrical panel repair, a technician finds a metal enclosure and a connected raceway that need a continuous bonding connection. The technician checks the existing bonding jumper, corrects its termination if needed, and verifies continuity across the connected parts.
